I knew what Daddy wanted. There’s only one thing that always brought that soft, knowing smile to his lips. Especially because Mommy hated it more than anything else in the world! No shoes, never shoes for this. Daddy told me I had to go to my closet and throw all of my shoes in the trash. I walked barefoot through the garden, deliberately, slowly. Across the freshly turned earth where Daddy had planted his roses, so that my soles were black and soil hid between my toes.
When I stepped back into the kitchen, I walked directly to Daddy, standing between his spread knees as he sat in his worn armchair. I extended my feet, crusted with garden debris. He didn’t say a word. Instead, he slowly, deliberately, picked up my ankle and lowered his head. His tongue was warm, sweeping away the grit, the soil, the evidence of my outdoor adventure.
I knew what Daddy wanted.
Mommy sat beside us, watching with disgust. “Edward! Stop this at once!” Her voice was a hiss that she barely kept contained. “It’s disgusting! She’s our daughter!” Her words were venomous, aimed at both of us, but mostly at me, I thought. Or, rather, I knew.
Daddy didn’t even look up. He just kept licking, his eyes fixated on my right foot, on the task, and most importantly on me. When he finally lifted his head, my foot was clean and his lips were smudged with earth. He looked at Mommy then, his expression utterly blank, devoid of apology or care. “She just needed her feet cleaned, dear,” he said, softly. Daddy never overtly reacted to Mommy’s anger. He almost reveled in it, knowing she was so jealous of our bond.
He turned back to me as a small, secret smile formed on his dirty lips. “You’re my good girl, aren’t you Amber,” he whispered, as his thumb caressed my now-clean arch. “You’re my favorite girl.” And in his eyes, I saw it, the confirmation that no matter how loud Mommy screams, no matter how much she hates it, I’m the one who truly matters. I’m the one he loves the most.
