I don’t even look up from my laptop as I hear the hesitation in his footsteps. I know exactly the type of man who is standing on the other side of my mahogany door. It’s a man of stature, probably a CEO or a surgeon. Someone who spends his days forcing the world to bend to his will. Here; however, he is anything but.
“Come in,” I say, calmly. His posture is already collapsing into the familiar slouch of a man desperate to be relieved of his own authority. He is shaking, just slightly. I love that tremor. It’s the sound of a man discovering that the weight of the world is too heavy and he’s finally found someone who can crush him under it. And, boy, do I love crushing a man.

“Stella,” he breathes, as his gaze anchors to the tips of my heels. He doesn’t dare meet my eyes. He knows that if he looks at me, he’ll lose his nerve, or worse, he’ll ask for something I’m not in the mood to give.
“You’re late,” I remark, closing my laptop with a sharp, final click. The sound echoes in the silence of the room. It makes him flinch. “I charge by the minute and you’ve already forfeited five of them. Sit.” He moves toward the chair, sinking onto the edge. He has paid a small fortune just to exist in my orbit for an hour, to trade his autonomy for the cold, exquisite precision of my demands. This man wants to be stripped of his titles, his influence, and his ego. He wants to be nothing and I am the only one capable of rendering him that empty.
I stand up and walk to him, stopping only when my silhouette swallows him. I trail a finger along his jawline, then hook my nail beneath his chin, forcing his head back. Finally, he looks at me. He has no choice but to look at me. His pupils are blown wide and his breathing is shallow.
“You think this is a transaction,” I whisper, leaning down until my breath brushes his skin. “But it’s a surrender. You’re not paying for my time, darling. You’re paying for the privilege of being discarded.”
