The bass was so loud I could feel it in my ribs long before the headliner walked onstage. Lights swept across the crowd in restless colors while thousands of people pressed shoulder to shoulder, sweaty and buzzing with anticipation. I’d barely found space near the middle when he appeared beside me like he’d always been there.

He was tall and good looking. I smiled at him, leaning in close to be heard over the music. “You’re tall.”

He raised his eyebrow and leaned into me further. “Is that a complaint?”

Laughing, I shook my head. “It’s a good thing!” I touched his arm and leaned to see the stage better. I was trying to be casual, but lingered long enough to let him wonder just how casual the evening could be.

The main act started, guitars and drums thrumming through the arena, and the crowd surged forward. I caught herself against his chest, laughing and watching him through my lashes.

“Dangerous spot,” he said.

“You planning to protect me?” I asked, moving to stand directly in front of him. I kept eye contact for a moment before turning back to the stage, moving in time with the music.

As the set went on, we slipped into the temporary intimacy concerts always seem to create. We were singing lyrics at each other, and sharing drinks. Leaning close enough that every sentence brushed warm breath against each other’s skin. Every time the lights flashed across his face, I caught a different expression; challenging, curious, always with a growing desire in the background.

Halfway through the headliner’s set, the singer told everyone to put their hands up.

I grabbed his wrist and lifted his arm with hers, laughing when he rolled his eyes.

“Commit to the experience,” I said, bumping my hip against his.

“You seem very invested in my behavior.” He bumped back, pulling his wrist from my grip; only to grasp my wrist in his big hand.

“Maybe I am.” I smiled and ran my free hand along his shoulder.

The crowd moved as one when the chorus hit, and suddenly we were dancing closer. Close enough that I could feel the rhythm of his hips through the crush of people. Not enough to be obvious. Just enough to make concentration difficult.

“You do this with everyone at concerts?” I asked.

“Only with you.” He brought my hand to his lips, and I felt the barest whisper of lips against my knuckles.

I smiled and tilted my head towards the exit. The lights dropped low, the arena glowing gold from hundreds of phone screens. I leaned forward and went on tiptoe to whisper in his ear, “This is my favorite song. Let’s really enjoy it.”
