The only light in my apartment is a single bulb swinging from a loose cord. Puppet, my nickname for the man who walks the line between devotion and dread, is already waiting in my living room with his shoulders hunched as if he’s bracing for a storm he cannot see. His eyes remain fixed on the floorboards and I can hear his breath. It sounds shallow, like the rhythm of a heart that beats faster when it knows it is being watched.
“Stella,” he whispers, trembling. I smile and he flinches. The movement is tiny, but enough to tell me he is listening. The rules between us are more of a contract that’s etched in ink and fear. Obey, or the consequences will be more than a bruised ego. He knows the price of disobedience. Exile, humiliation, the kind of silence that follows you into the night.
Puppet Master
I step forward and place a single, polished leather cuff on his wrist. He does not protest. He only watches, as his eyes flicker to the lock, then back to me, as if he’s surrendering his will with each click.
“You will strip, and you will stand in the center of the room, and you will recite the oath you swore before we began.” I stop talking and watch him. He obeys. His skin almost glows in the dim light as he steps into the center of the room and begins speaking of loyalty, obedience, and the promise to become nothing more than a vessel for my desires.
I watch his shoulders tremble with each word and hear the way his breath catches when my heels click against the floor. I place a cold steel spoon against his throat as a reminder that the line between pleasure and pain is nothing more than an edge.
“Do not speak. Do not move. If you falter, the darkness will find you in ways you have yet to imagine.” As I turn away, the bulb sways, the light flickering, casting his silhouette against the wall like a puppet on a stage. Thankfully, I’m the one pulling the strings.
