He was kneeling before me with his head bowed. Fear is a sound I understand intimately. It’s a language universally welcomed and accepted here. My gaze drifted down the line of my black pencil skirt, lingering on the whip on table beside me. “Look at me,” I commanded.
The sound of my voice broke the tension like a glass shattering. He flinched, then lifted his chin slowly and reluctantly. His eyes were a deep, unsettling blue, swimming with an emotion I recognized instantly. It was the terrifying beauty of surrender. He wasn’t looking at a person; he was looking at the weight of his own submission.

“You came here seeking structure,” I continued, circling him slowly. “Because you believed the chaos in your mind could be cured by a simple exchange of roles. You want temporary relief.” I stopped directly behind him. The scent of my perfume—cedar and spice—must have been overwhelming from that close.
“But there is no temporary relief here. There is only vérité.” I reached out and my fingers settled at the nape of his neck, just where a person feels most exposed. The place where the slightest pressure can feel like a threat to life itself. My touch was clinical, yet intentional. He knew it, too.
“Tell me, without thinking, without hesitation,” I murmured, leaning in until my voice was a whisper. “What are you?” He struggled for a moment, as the tension made his muscles twitch beneath my glove. I held still, waiting,. This was the test. The dark moment where the ego dissolves.
Finally, the words came to him. “I am yours, Stella. Only yours.” He wasn’t a man anymore. He was a perfect blank slate, waiting for my instruction. I squeezed his shoulder lightly. “Correct,” I replied, pulling my hand away. The air seemed to chill around me. “Now, stay exactly where you are. We have only just begun the process of defining what that means.”
I watched him drop his head back down. He was trapped now, pinned beneath my shadow. And I loved it.
