My big boy was napping, so I ran out real quick to the grocery store and did a few other fast things around town before zipping back h as I carried the grocery bags into the kitchen and set them on the island. My baby was awake and was fidgeting with a bowl. Shakey hands tried to pour cereal, but he was getting more on the island than in the bowl. I smiled, watching him be so independent, and asked how his nap had been.
His eyes still looked sleepy and his hair was a wreck. He shrugged and shuffled to the other side of the island. I wondered why he moved away from me when he was typically such a snuggly boy. And then it hit me. I lifted my chin and sniffed the kitchen air. He was looking down into the bowl to avoid eye contact. “Baby? Did you make a stinky in your diaper during your nap?”
There’s No Hiding When You’re Stinky
“No!” His head shook, but he still wouldn’t look at me. I started to walk around the island toward him, but he shuffled further away. Only further assuring his guilt.
“Come here and let Mommy check. I think you made a stinky in there.”
His head shook harder, and his hands reached back to cover his tushy. “No! Mommy, I didn’t. I didn’t make a stinky.” His cute cheeks were red with embarrassment as I scooped him up into my arms and shushed him.
“Shh, It’s okay, baby. Mommy can smell you, though; there is no hiding when you’re stinky, Mister!” He huffed as I leaned over him and pulled his pants back to look inside the backside of his messy diaper. “Oh my, look at that! Mommy was right! You did make a smelly mess during your nap, but you did it in your diaper just like you’re supposed to! Mommy is so proud of you, baby.” I hugged him and kissed his forehead while giving him little diaper pats on his bum.
“Really? It’s okay?” He looked up at me with worried eyes, and I giggled.
“Yes. I’m happy you went potty in your diaper. That’s what Mommy likes. Now, let’s get this cereal off my island and into your belly before we change you, okay?”
