Every year doorways are decorated with mistletoe, and people kiss as they pass under it. Some people even use this tradition as a way to break the ice and earn their very first kiss with a special someone, but why? Have you, like me, wondered why we kiss under some spring of leaves? It’s strange, to say the least. I had to look into it!
There are many fambles, as with all ancient traditions, that vary with each culture. The most beautiful one is that a Norse Goddess lost her son to an arrow made of mistletoe. After his passing, she vowed that mistletoe would kiss anyone who passed beneath it so long as it was never used to hurt anyone ever again.
Kiss Me Under The Mistletoe
Of course, as I said, stories and myths change as time goes on. This beautiful mourning mother’s wish has turned into something that keeps romance and peace alive. However, should a woman find herself under the mistletoe without a partner to kiss, it’s said she is doomed to be single for the following year. I can’t imagine Goddess Figg had this in mind. Or the fact that it’s said no woman under the mistletoe could refuse a kiss from a suitor who finds her there.
No matter the reason for the silly tradition, I still love the flirtatious nature it brings out in people when they suddenly find themselves standing under one. So, should you find me there, kiss me under the mistletoe.
